How Long Do Cupping Marks Last?

Those circular marks on your back are not bruises. They are your body responding to treatment. Here is what they mean, how long they stay, and what you can do about them.

Quick Answer

Cupping marks from Hijama therapy typically fade within 3 to 10 days. Light marks from a first dry cupping session can be gone within 24 to 48 hours. Darker marks from wet cupping may take up to two weeks to fully clear. They are not bruises. They are a normal part of how your body responds to suction therapy and they will go away on their own.

After your first Hijama session, looking in the mirror can be a surprise. The circles are dark. Sometimes they are very dark. And the first thought most people have is whether something went wrong.

Nothing went wrong. In 14 years of healthcare experience and hundreds of sessions at our Scarborough clinic, this is one of the most common concerns clients bring up either right after their session or the next morning when the marks have deepened overnight. This article covers what those marks actually are, why they appear, how long they last based on the type of cupping you received, and what you can do to support your skin as it heals.

“The best of what you use for treatment is Hijama.”
Prophet Muhammad &#ﷺ;, Sahih Bukhari 5696

These Are Not Bruises. Here Is What They Actually Are.

A bruise happens when blunt force damages tissue and causes blood to leak into surrounding muscle and skin. Cupping marks work differently. When the cup is placed and suction is applied, it pulls skin and the very top layers of soft tissue upward into the cup. This draws blood and lymphatic fluid toward the surface and causes tiny capillaries just under the skin to rupture.

The blood that pools in that space sits under the skin, not in damaged muscle. There is no tissue tearing. No blunt trauma. No injury in the traditional sense. What you see on the surface is called ecchymosis, which is simply blood pooled beneath the skin from those small capillary ruptures.

In wet cupping (Hijama), small superficial incisions are made after the initial dry cupping phase to draw out stagnant blood. This makes marks from Hijama typically darker and longer lasting than those from dry cupping alone, because more blood has been mobilised in that area.

Something clients notice over time

Clients who come in regularly for Hijama sessions often notice their marks getting lighter and fading faster over time. A first session on a tight, congested area might leave dark marks for 9 or 10 days. By the fourth or fifth session on the same spot, there may barely be any visible mark at all. This is a sign that circulation in that area is genuinely improving between sessions.

What the Color of Your Marks Is Telling You

This is something most aftercare guides skip entirely. The color of a cupping mark is not random. It reflects the state of circulation in that specific area before the session. Practitioners who do this work regularly learn to read those colors as useful clinical information.

Light pink or red
Good circulation. Blood flow was already healthy in this area before treatment.
Bright purple
Some congestion or tension. Common in shoulders, upper back, and neck areas.
Dark purple or maroon
Significant stagnation. These areas often correspond to chronic pain or long-term tension.
Yellow or pale
Often seen in areas with cold stagnation or old injuries. Also what marks look like as they fade.

None of these colors indicate something went wrong during your session. They are simply a picture of what was happening in your tissue before the cups were applied. The darker marks are actually the ones most worth paying attention to because they point to the areas your body has been working hardest to manage.

How Long Do Cupping Marks Actually Last?

The honest answer is that it depends on several things. But here is a realistic range broken down by the type of session:

Moving or facial cupping
1-3
days to clear
Standard dry cupping
3-7
days to clear
Wet cupping (Hijama)
7-14
days to clear

As the marks fade, they go through a color shift similar to how a bruise heals. Dark red or purple becomes brownish, then yellowish, then nothing. Your body is quietly reabsorbing the pooled blood cells during this whole period. That process is happening even when you cannot see obvious changes day to day.

What Makes Some Marks Last Longer Than Others

Two people can receive identical sessions and walk out with very different marks that last very different amounts of time. Here are the main variables:

FactorClears faster whenTakes longer when
Session typeDry or moving cuppingWet Hijama cupping
Suction levelLight to moderateStrong or prolonged
Local circulationAlready healthyCongested or stagnant
HydrationWell hydratedDehydrated before session
Skin age and elasticityYounger, supple skinOlder or thinner skin
How often you have HijamaRegular sessionsFirst session ever
MedicationsNo blood thinnersAspirin, warfarin, etc.

If you are on blood-thinning medication, please always tell your practitioner before your session. Marks can be more extensive and take longer to clear, and your treatment may need to be adjusted accordingly.

Aftercare: What Actually Helps Marks Fade Faster

You cannot dramatically speed up your body’s healing timeline. But there are real, practical things that make a genuine difference in how quickly cupping marks clear and how well your skin recovers.

Drink water before you do anything else

This is the single most impactful thing you can do after a session. Your lymphatic system is doing a lot of work reabsorbing pooled blood cells and clearing metabolic waste. It needs water to do that well. Drink at least 8 to 10 glasses over the 24 hours following your session. Warm water is easier on the body than cold. Sunnah drinks like warm honey water or black seed tea are excellent choices that also align with prophetic tradition.

Keep the treated area warm

Warmth helps blood vessels stay open and supports faster reabsorption. A warm shower a few hours after your session, a light layer of clothing over cupped areas, or a gentle heating pad on the lowest setting all help. What you want to avoid is cold exposure, because cold causes blood vessels to contract and can slow down the clearing process considerably. This includes cold showers, ice packs, and spending extended time in air conditioning without covering the treated area.

Apply black seed oil

The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) said: “Use this black seed, for it contains a cure for every disease except death.” (Sahih Bukhari 5688). Black seed oil (Nigella Sativa) applied gently to the marked areas a few hours after your session can soothe the skin and support healing. It has anti-inflammatory properties and has been used in Islamic medicine for this purpose for centuries. Apply a small amount and allow it to absorb. There is no need to rub hard on areas that are still tender.

Rest on the day of your session

Hijama triggers an internal healing response. Your body is genuinely doing work in the hours after treatment. Going straight back to intense physical activity interrupts that process. Light walking the next day is fine and actually helpful for circulation. Intense gym sessions, heavy lifting, or high-stress activities within 24 hours are worth avoiding.

Do not cover marks with tight clothing right away

Loose, breathable fabric over treated areas is fine. Tight waistbands, straps, or compression garments pressing directly on fresh marks can cause unnecessary discomfort and slow down the skin’s natural process. After the first 24 hours, normal clothing is completely fine.

A note from Rabia Anjum

At our Scarborough clinic, we always go through aftercare instructions with every client before they leave. One thing I see often is people applying ice because they think it will help reduce the marks faster. It actually does the opposite. Warmth, water, rest, and black seed oil are your best tools. Keep things simple and your body will do the rest.

How Marks Differ Across Our Cupping Services

Not every cupping session produces the same marks. Here is what to expect from each of the services we offer at Hijama Natural Healing:

Wet cupping (Hijama)

This is the full traditional Islamic Hijama method. It involves an initial dry cupping phase followed by small superficial incisions and a second round of cupping to draw out stagnant blood. The marks are typically the darkest and last the longest of any cupping type. Expect 7 to 14 days for full clearing. The incision sites themselves heal within a few days when aftercare is followed properly.

Dry cupping

Cups are placed and suction is created without any incisions. Marks are usually lighter than Hijama and fade within 3 to 7 days. A good starting point for new clients who want to experience cupping before committing to a full Hijama session.

Moving cupping

Oil is applied to the skin and the cups are gently glided across the area rather than staying stationary. This produces the least visible marks of any method, often just a mild redness similar to a vigorous massage. Most people see these clear within 24 to 48 hours.

Facial cupping

Facial cupping uses much lighter suction and smaller cups specifically designed for delicate skin. When done correctly, it rarely leaves any visible marks. Any minor redness typically clears within a few hours. It is one of the gentler services we offer and a favourite among clients concerned about visible aftereffects.

Head cupping

Head cupping involves placing cups on the scalp, often over specific Sunnah points. Because the scalp is covered with hair, marks are not visible at all in most cases. Any mild tenderness usually resolves within 24 hours.

Mark or Bruise: How to Tell Them Apart

Because they look similar, first-time clients often ask this. The differences are actually quite clear once you know what to look for:

  • Shape: Cupping marks are perfectly circular and match exactly where the cup was placed. Bruises from impact are irregular.
  • Pain level: Cupping marks may feel mildly tender when pressed in the first day or two. They should not cause sharp pain. Traumatic bruises are usually more painful to touch, especially in the first 48 hours.
  • Swelling: Impact bruises often come with localised swelling from tissue damage. Cupping marks are flat at or just below skin level because there is no tissue damage.
  • Context: You know you had cupping. If circular marks appear without that context, that is worth getting checked by a doctor.

The key point is that cupping marks involve no damage to muscle, fascia, nerves, or deep tissue. They are a superficial skin-level response to suction. This is precisely why experienced Hijama practitioners can apply significant suction to sensitive areas without causing harm.

Normal Reactions Versus Signs You Should Call Your Practitioner

Almost everything you will experience after a session is normal. But here are the signs that distinguish a typical recovery from something that needs attention:

Normal and expected after Hijama

Circular marks in the treated areas. Mild tenderness when pressing on marks. Feeling tired or sleepy for the rest of the day. Mild thirst. Feeling emotionally lighter or slightly emotional. Marks darkening slightly on day 2 before they begin to fade.

Contact your practitioner or a doctor if you notice

Marks showing no signs of change after three full weeks.
Blistering or open sores at cup sites that were not from wet cupping incisions.
Increasing redness, warmth, or discharge from incision sites after 48 hours.
Sharp or worsening pain at cupping sites rather than gradual improvement.
Skin burns, which can occasionally occur with improperly applied heat or fire cupping elsewhere.
Circular marks on an area of skin that was not treated in your session.

At Hijama Natural Healing, we use sterile, single-use equipment for every session and follow strict hygiene protocols. If you received your Hijama at our clinic and have any concerns about how your skin is healing, please reach out to us directly. We would always rather hear from you than have you worried at home.

Questions We Hear Most Often

Do darker marks mean the Hijama worked better?
Not exactly. Darker marks reflect greater stagnation or reduced circulation in that area before treatment, not a higher-quality session. Lighter marks do not mean your session was less effective. As you continue with regular Hijama and your circulation improves, marks on previously congested spots tend to lighten significantly. You can read more about the internal process in our article on what happens inside your body in the 72 hours after Hijama.
When can I shower after a Hijama session?
Wait at least 4 to 6 hours before showering. Warm water is fine and will not affect your marks negatively. Avoid hot baths, saunas, or steam rooms within the first 24 hours. Cold showers in that window are also worth avoiding because cold causes vasoconstriction, which can slow the clearing of marks and create discomfort at treated sites. For a full breakdown of what to do and avoid after your session, see our guide on things to avoid after Hijama.
Will cupping marks leave permanent scars?
No. Dry cupping marks are entirely beneath the skin surface and leave no permanent trace once healed. For wet cupping (Hijama), the small lancet incisions are very superficial and heal cleanly within a few days with proper aftercare. Scarring from professionally performed Hijama is extremely rare and generally requires improper aftercare or a pre-existing skin condition.
How soon can I have Hijama again on the same area?
We always recommend waiting until marks from the previous session have fully cleared before cupping the same area again. This usually means at least one week, sometimes two for darker marks. Treating a different area before then is fine. Visit our Sunnah Days page for guidance on the optimal Islamic calendar dates for scheduling your next session.
Is it normal to feel tired or emotional after Hijama?
Very much so. Feeling sleepy or fatigued after Hijama is one of the most common things clients report, and it is a completely normal sign that your body has shifted into recovery mode. Some people also feel a mild emotional release. Rest, warmth, and good hydration are the right response to both.
Is Hijama available for women at your clinic?
Yes. Rabia Anjum provides all services in a private, comfortable, and fully Islamically appropriate environment for women. We also account for cycle timing in our treatment planning. Visit our dedicated page on Hijama for women in Canada to learn more.
How much does Hijama cost in Scarborough?
Dry cupping sessions start at $70. Wet cupping (Hijama) is $100. Full body detox wet cupping is $200. For a complete list, see our cupping therapy pricing guide for Canada.

To Summarise

Cupping marks are normal. They are expected. They will go away. The typical timeline is 3 to 7 days for dry cupping and 7 to 14 days for wet Hijama. Darker marks are not a warning sign. They are often a sign that those areas needed the treatment most.

Stay hydrated, keep warm, rest on the day of your session, apply black seed oil, and give your body the space to do what it does. You do not need to do much else.

If you are in Scarborough or the wider Toronto area and want to experience Hijama from a certified practitioner in a safe, clean, and faith-aligned environment, our clinic is here for you. The Prophet (peace be upon him) recommended Hijama. We are grateful to be able to offer it.

May Allah grant you shifa. Ameen.
